You and I are in the same boat. We are both website owners. We both have a blog. And we both want to become search engine optimization techniques masters so we drive traffic to our site. While I have yet to discover the secret to the sauce, I’m learning the tricks of the trade quickly. Search Engine Optimization techniques (SEO) is the internet’s version of the individual holding a clearance sign on a street corner. Without it, not much traffic will be brought into a website (or a business). But with it—it’s a whole different ballgame.
First and foremost, to get started you must publish content that’s relevant to your niche. Let’s say your niche is elementary education, primarily targeted toward preschool and kindergarten teachers. This is a particularly narrow niche, but if you research topics, you can write content on a consistent basis. Make sure the content is high quality. It shouldn’t include spelling errors, punctuation errors or grammatical errors. There shouldn’t errors that involve misspelled names or inaccurate facts. If you need it, hire a proofreader. There are people that make a living proofreading content and would be happy to do it.
Search engine optimization techniques are guest posting on blogs and can also be beneficial. This is where you post on blogs that are relevant to your niche. Bloggers may find you or it may be best to seek out them. Some of these blogs may pay, while others don’t pay at all. But don’t focus on the money. The exposure is what you want; you want to be seen by others and have traffic driven back to your site. It’s a win-win for both people involved. There is a silver lining in the cloud, however; you are creating a back link. This does improve your SEO ranking in Google, Yahoo and Bing. It is going to boost you up in the rankings. So get out of your comfort zone. Reach out and network with bloggers. I’m sure you have a good message to share.
Navigation is also a key player in your search engine optimization techniques for ranking. When a visitor is on your site, how easy is it for them to find everything? If they have to search for your blog or products, they are likely to go to your competitor. Yet, if you have a clean layout with everything easy to access, that user is going to stay much longer. You want people to stay a long time on your site. This pushes you up in Google or Bing. But when they only stay a few minutes, it’s like an elevator suddenly dropping ten floors in a few seconds. You go from page 1 to Bing to page 6 or 20.
Another sSearch engine optimization techniques are your page load speed. Too many graphics or videos are going to slow your page down. On my site, I have a picture with every post. I believe this is the best strategy because pictures break up the text. But I never put the picture full size. Doing so is going to slow down your page. It also slows down your page if you have videos that auto-play once the page open. A lot of pages have advertisements that do this and it’s super annoying. Google and Bing punish these websites with a low SEO ranking. If you find that your traffic has dropped, you may want to perform a speed test on your website.
Varying the types of content is a fantastic way to increase your search engine optimization techniques for ranking. Think of your content style. Do you mostly have blog posts with or without pictures? Do you have a mixture of pictures or videos? Polls, quizzes or infographics? When newspapers were first printed, they had no pictures and were the same font. How boring! Imagine if that was the format of blogs. What would be the incentive to read them? Spice up your blog content. If you feel blocked in what to post, create content that relates what you posted within the last week. Maybe create a poll reflecting a post or post a review. Readers want variety. If they see the sam hum-drum content, they are going to look elsewhere. Your SEO rankings are going to plummet and you’re going to have to find your target audience all over again.
Finally, go to your website and fix any broken links. Google and Bing constantly scan the internet for content. But when they see a site that has broken links, that site drops in the rankings. Google and Bing don’t have a human voice; not technically. They have human workers, but it’s an automatic scan. To this scan, a broken link means that the website is either not there or it has been abandoned. The longer these links stay broken, the most your SEO rankings are going to plummet to the ocean floor. Fix the links and you’ll rise to the top of the competition yet again.
